Can anyone say what the essence of a city is? Is the question tough? Well, let me put in this way. How can we recognize a city? You can’t recognize a city by means of its people since in each urban center there are innumerable people. Then? We identify a city by its attributes. Each city has its own vivacity and we can’t compare one with another. There is nothing common between New York and Paris yet both attract millions of people. What is the greatest center of attention in Paris? It’s the Eiffel Tower! In the same way and even in your city there are precious buildings. These buildings make people identify your city at ease.
What should be your duty then? You should be the first citizen and make a movement (if necessary) to preserve these historic buildings. However, at times, you may have to vie with the respective city council, in this regard. Reason? The councilors, in general, never get able to understand the necessity of preserving buildings (with historical significances). Feeling lonely? You can certainly take the divine guidance from the preservationists of downtown Detroit who are waging a relentless battle against officials to conserve the old Lafayette Building of the city. It was built in 1923 and occupies a triangular lot, bordered by Michigan Avenue, West Lafayette Boulevard, and Shelby Street.
The building, at present, is derelict but is a perfect specimen of the neo-classical architecture style, and is built with mainly brick, limestone, and terra cotta. Anyone can find that trees, as the building is unused, have grown from its roof and graffito (surely by lots of creative geniuses!) spoil the windows although they remain intact. But these reasons fail to prove the necessity to break down the building. On the contrary, in this age of global warming, the preservation of an old building seems to be better and reasonable.
Can you find this splendid architecture anymore? Not at all! It’s therefore the time for you to raise your voice too. Yes, you can! In this age of technological brilliance and also development you can send an email within a second. Use this opportunity and join your city’s struggle with this. Make an international forum for preserving historical buildings. We must save the history. This is the most appreciable form of globalization at this juncture.
