The year 2008 will be regarded as outstanding in the history of Wisconsin. It is one of the fifty states in the United States of America, located in the north central part of the United States. What is the major reason behind this feat? The year has witnessed a great success through reuniting more owners with their lost property. However, the credit in this respect goes to the Office of the State Treasurer. It has come to the knowledge from the insiders, that the very department has been instrumental in returning more than $28 million of unclaimed property to more than 25,000 people. Well, the State attained similar accomplishments in 2007. But, at this time, it is more since almost $3.3 million and 1,000 people have been added.
Speaking on this State Treasurer Dawn Marie Sass stated very firmly, “During these times of financial challenges, the recovery of unclaimed property could make a big difference for a family. That’s why my office will continue its pro-active outreach to raise awareness of our programs and searchable website into 2009. By doing so, we will strive to set another record number of reunions.”
According to the available information, throughout the year 2008, Treasurer Sass extended her second annual statewide Unclaimed Property outreach tour to all 72 counties in the State of Wisconsin. She, as a result of this hectic tour, was able to bring the unclaimed property database to all areas. How did she perform such a mammoth task? Well, she didn’t lose any chance and was found to exploit every prospect to achieve the objective. She utilized stops at county fairs, county courthouses, various speaking engagements and other public events and this resulted in several hundred additional property claims.
It is to be noted, according to Wisconsin law, after one to five years of immobility Wisconsin businesses are mandated to turn all unclaimed money, stock and safe deposit boxes to the State Treasurer’s office for custody and there is no limit for collecting them.
