Bengal concentrates on constructing IT building amid downturn

Though the withdrawal of the Tata project from Singur as a result of political brawl and also the conflicts between the government and agricultural laborers has badly affected the pro-industry face of Bengal, it is upbeat again and is counting on the development of IT infrastructure to a large extent. What makes Bengal, one of the prime states in the eastern half of India, so confident regarding the IT infrastructure? Well, the state, according to national and international observers, has an enviable talent pool and that emboldens the spirit of the state.

Well, the sordid effect of the global meltdown has also affected the state and its IT sector to a certain extent but Bengal is confident that all is not lost and it has the competence to turn around again. However, the government seems to be confident that, owing to recent developments, it would not be able to accomplish the target of becoming one of the country’s best three IT states by 2010. It should be noted that the IT sector boom started in Bengal in 2001-02 and now Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), by contributing 45 percent to the growth of the IT units in the state, happens to be the major player, among an assortment of big national and international IT companies.

Due to this scenario the government is confident that it will again witness the expansion, once the downturn ends. All these reasons have encouraged it to concentrate more on IT infrastructure that comprises buildings and other necessary aspects. In recent times, the Kolkata-based Dhunseri Group has started a project to build a twin-tower IT office complex at an investment of Rs.1.3 billion (Rs.130 crore/$26 million). The state government, apart from this, based on public funds, is constructing buildings in Durgapur and Siliguri, the two significant satellite towns of Kolkata, the state capital.

How do they look like? It has been learnt, that they bear a resemblance to well-appreciated IT infrastructure building that Kolkata boasts of. Last but not least, the state is gearing up to house its first animation park that will consist of marvelous buildings as well.
