The international community is terribly shocked at the destruction of numerous buildings in Gaza along with the extermination of innocent civilians following the Israel-Hamas clashes. Well, it must be stated clearly, that sectarian clashes or conflicts owing to religious differences is nothing new in the Middle East, which is regarded as one of the most disturbed regions in the globe. The entire region from the late 40s (just after the completion of World War II) has been continuing as the capital of continuous economic and political turmoil and for that reason the destruction of buildings due to warfare is also not new. But the Israeli assaults and the following massacres, in every respect, have been unusual. The brisk and meticulous planning that has been responsible for each and every success (?) has been bizarre.
The conflict started on 27 December and has been continuing uninterruptedly. The pretext of the war was the offense of the Palestinians, especially the rockets thrown by Hamas, but according to the latest information, 1,200 Palestinians have been killed, with the serious injuries of untold people and destruction of buildings. What can we conclude from these premises? The Israeli retribution was targeted against the civilian bastions and hence the number of ravaged buildings and casualty has been so high. Well, of course, there have been Israeli deaths also. Thirteen Israelis that includes three civilians and 10 soldiers have been killed during the campaign.
What is the present situation therefore? The fighting is continuing in the same manner although it is being heard that the Israeli cabinet is pondering seriously over the prospect of a ceasefire. Will it be unilateral? It is not possible to confirm at this hour but according to sources there would not be any involvement of Hamas. It is also not clear how Hamas will respond since it is said the group will ignore any truce unless its demands are met.
But Hamas has simply nothing to do expect conceding since the war has almost throttled its existence by now. Ceasefire or armistice is the need of the hour. But there is a question. Will it be able to stop the destruction of buildings and more casualties?
