How will you feel if your old library comprising a number of rare books gets gutted? You will, definitely, not become pained only but the sky will fall upon you also. There is only one reason. The library was your own creation and the books were your dearest belongings. Now, simply replace the library with a whole building and feel the situation. The feeling is inexplicable. This happened to be the situation to the adherents when their beloved Portland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Louisville caught fire on last Friday. The situation became more precarious since, according to the arson investigators, the frigid weather was hampering the desperate efforts of rescue.
It is to be noted that the Portland Avenue Presbyterian Church is not a new building in any way and has a rich history along with it. Are you aware of the history of this church building? The red brick building dates to the early 1890s and for that reason the Portland Presbyterian has stood for more than a century. What’s more the entire building was completely restored in 2005 thanks to the noble efforts of its authority, staff along with the adherents and well-wishers. What is the present situation therefore? More than half of the structure now lays in ruins, if not more.
According to the insiders of the church, the full account of the devastation is unknown yet and the reason of the sudden devastating conflagration is being investigated by the concerned officials. Has there been any casualty? Well, not yet, but one firefighter was injured when a brick fell from the church.
Is there any chance of renovation as many are terming it as a bleak prospect? Whatever it is, the Pastor Willa Fae Williams is not ready to let it get obliterated without a fight. Williams said, “We restored this body with blood, sweat and tears from lots and lots of people, lots of help from our sisters and brothers across this area. And this means so much to so many people. We have members scattered all across the country who grew up here and have never forgotten their roots. And this is just devastating to so many people.”
