Refurbishment of the Gaza city is getting more and more complicated with the passing of days. This is not owing to the obstinacy of a number of pertinent parties but for the reason what needs to be done and how to do it. Well, any veteran of war may argue that devastations are too natural in war and there is the need of an overhaul at each and every time. This standpoint is, indeed, accepted but there is a difference. The desolation that took place in Gaza on account of the Israeli air strikes along with ground assaults during 22 days is unparallel and there is perhaps not a fully unimpaired building in the region to save you from the torrential rain.
What is the scale of damage? It has been learnt, that 21,000 homes, if not more, were damaged or destroyed along with factories and government buildings and the requisite money for the renovation is not less than $2 billion in any case. Nevertheless, many agencies conversant with the situation and also the level of damage have termed this as an initial necessity while more will be required with the passing of days. But there is a problem and this is created by the presence of Hamas.
This became more evident from the recent statement of Louis Michel, the Humanitarian Chief of European Union, an organization which is by far the largest overall donor to the Palestinians. According to his views, Hamas is a terrorist movement and through this he expresses the majority view in both US and European Union. Both of U.S. and European Union along with Israel consider Hamas as a terror organization. Therefore they are reluctant to give Hamas the money as part of a humanitarian aid although it is politically in charge of the Gaza Strip.
There is the firm presence of UNRWA in the region from its creation in 1949 to take care of Palestinian refugees and operates in camps across the Middle East. This UN organization is highly proficient and has earned admirations from all quarters thanks to its benevolent activities. For that reason the international donors are interested to bestow the money to this organization. It is said that the spearheading efforts of this U.N. humanitarian agency to rebuild buildings in Gaza can open a door to international donors.
We are also looking ahead for that day since the conditions of Gaza is not only appalling but can also be denoted as a mephitis. It’s the malodor of raped humanity.
