Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, Canada, and is located near the longitudinal centre of North America, at the confluence of the historic Red and Assiniboine Rivers, a point now commonly known as The Forks. But the city is in the news these days for a different reason. It is witnessing the emergence of a team of non-profit home renovation specialists and it has been learnt that the city is counting on it to a large extent.
What is the name of this team and its objective? Well, the group was known as called BUILD (Building Urban Industries for Local Development), especially during its commencement in the year 2006. The group was established in the form of a pilot project at that time and was aimed at overhauling inner city homes for energy efficiency. Besides there was also a noble aim to impart job training, in particular, to those people who had little or negligible know-how in construction trades.
But you will be amazed, if you make up your mind or decide to search the group in the World Wide Web. It may not be there! No the group is still operating but it has changed its name to Warm Up Winnipeg officially amid the enthusiastic recognition of a large number of its admirers.
What is the present activity of the group therefore? It has been found that its members (who are also growing steadily since its formation) are active in rendering energy-efficient upgrades to homes of qualifying low-income Winnipeggers. These upgrades take account of basement and attic insulation, pipe-wrapping and installation of dual-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads.
The basic aim of Warm Up Winnipeg, according to many, is more developed and deals with saving energy and water, reducing bills for low-income families and providing skills training to people looking to get into the workforce in unison.
The group has already earned a lot of admirers and this number is growing by leaps and bounds.
