Can the construction of buildings change the destiny of a city or a region in this bleak scenario? Well, you may have a different standpoint but the leaders and developers in the town of Santa Cruz, in western California on Monterey Bay, are thinking in this way. It has been found that the construction of a large number of buildings is under way in the city and business leaders have the firm conviction that it will help turn the city’s bleak financial picture. This mood also came out in the expression of Peter Koht, a premiere economic development coordinator of the city. As stated by him, “It’s a difficult time to be sure, but economies move in cycles and this is a slowdown, not a full stop.”
What are the new constructions then? They include 460 new hotel rooms, 758 new residences and 554,500 square feet of commercial space and this has been affirmed by the city Department of Economic Development and Redevelopment. What will be the amount of revenue? Nothing is clear till now since it’s quite difficult to estimate at this moment. But even this uncertainty has failed to deter the business groups in the domain of the city and they are glad that the business is rolling.
One of these people happens to be Sioux Anderson with Easy Access Developers, who is quite optimistic. Easy Access Developers is hopeful that its two developments on Lower Pacific Avenue, a nine-bedroom boutique hotel and a mixed-use building with retail and eight condos will develop at last and after many deliberations. “Some of the reasons that we went ahead right now is our effort to clean up this part of town,” Anderson said. “The nicer this end looks, the more everything is going to do, business-wise.”
Lori Lincoln with Joie de Vivre Hotels is another aspirant and hopes that the eatery will boost business at the Dream Inn. Lincoln stated, “We think people will be traveling closer to home, and we’ll have a fabulous ocean front hotel in Santa Cruz to go to.”
