IVCC fixed to build new tech center, come what may

It should be stated at the outset that the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees is firm to build up new $13 million Technology and Workforce Development Center and it is on the verge of moving with plans therefore. But there is a quandary. Where will the requisite money come from? This very project entails a lot of money. This happens to be the greatest concern of the pertinent authority at present. Well, there may be a solution. According to unnamed sources, the IVCC may ask voters to authorize a bond issue to finance the building provided that the state does not come or fails to appear through with a share of the construction funds.

Whatever it is, it is definite that IVCC is firm to pursue the plan. Moreover, as has been learnt, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran has given a rough idea of revamp of the college’s master development plan by now. Jerry Corcoran made a proposal of only the technology center, instead of building two large buildings, like technology and workforce development center and a community instructional center.

He said, “I think the reason we ought to seriously consider prioritizing the tech center is that it would boost economic development and create employment opportunities.” “We could attract more students to these technical programs that lead to great wages and we could assist local industry in training. In other words, give local industries that competitive edge and profitability.”

In the proposed center there will be the elegant presence of electronics technology, drafting, computer aided drafting and design, computer network administration, process operations, industrial electricity and the adult education program. On the other hand, there will be the inclusion of some more programs to the center. These include horticulture, manufacturing and industrial maintenance, including pneumatics, hydraulics and pipefitting. It should be noted that they are located in the east campus temporary buildings at present.
