After a long wait the new Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center worth $28-million has been inaugurated and in this regard credit goes to the humongous effort of the Wayne State University officials. The building is indeed posh and the presence of agleam glass doors makes it more exquisite. What will the main function of the building? According to concerned officials of the University, the space of the new building will accelerate the growth of new technology that will, among other things, help out researchers identify and treat diseases quicker. Apart from this, the technology will make Detroit’s roadways safer and test potential drinking water during a natural disaster or other emergency.
Wayne State University is located in Detroit, Michigan, in the city’s Midtown Cultural Center. It does consist of 12 schools and colleges offering more than 350 major subject areas to 33,000 graduate and undergraduate students. In addition, it has six extension centers in the Metro Detroit area providing access to a limited selection of courses. The institution is a prominent engine in metro Detroit’s educational, cultural, and economic landscape, as manifested through efforts such as its 75-acre (300,000 m2) research and technology park and its hosting of the Detroit Festival of the Arts.
What will be the result? As indicated by a section of the University’s faculty, these endeavors may lead to the substantial growth of Detroit’s economy. On this Mumtaz Usmen, Associate Dean for Research said, “It means new technology, improved energy systems and better health care.” It should also be noted that the building’s three stories and 82,500 square feet of space add to the existing two engineering buildings. However, for the time being, it will provide housing for new labs and meeting space for researchers and students.
Gregory Auner, professor of electrical and computer engineering and a driving force behind the school’s efforts in smart sensors said, what’s planned for the Danto center is the kind of research that will have implications “from the space station to a surgical suite.”
