Canada construction industry surges

When there is a will, there is a way. However may be the intensity of darkness, there is a new dawn always. There can’t be more apposite expressions than these to describe the feats of Canada in recent times. Canada has witnessed a spectacular development as its building permits did skyrocket all of a sudden in June. This, without a shred of doubt, is the third gain in four months on account of new projects for hotels and laboratories. Residential construction plans increased for the fourth straight month.

As per reports of Statistics Canada, the total value of permits issued by municipalities advanced 1 percent to C$5.19 billion ($4.83 billion). It is to be noted that economists did forecast a drop of 3 percent, the median of 15 estimates. The agency revised May’s gain to 17.5 percent from the 14.8 percent originally reported.

What do all these indicate? Well, it may indicate that the recession that did initiate last year is finally lessening after the Bank of Canada slashes its benchmark lending rate to a record 0.25 percent. The central bank estimated in July that housing will cut 0.6 percentage points from growth this year. That’s more optimistic than an April forecast of a 1.1 percentage point drop from housing this year.

Speaking on this Charmaine Buskas, an economist with TD Securities in Toronto, said in a note to clients, “The continued strength of the building permit data bodes well for the Canadian construction market.” “It is clear that domestic considerations will remain a key driver for the economy, as the external sector remains under pressure.”

Let’s focus on the mode of development then. As stated by Statistics Canada, permits for non-residential construction rose 1.5 percent to C$2.51 billion and the benefit was led by an 11 percent jump in commercial buildings to C$1.3 billion, which was credited to new plans for hotels and laboratories in Ontario.

Residential permits, on the other hand, increased 0.5 percent to C$2.68 billion, since single-family homes posted a gain of 3.6 percent to C$1.7 billion.
