This is the most awkward process under the sun. However, the majority of the people follow this. Well, I am talking of the destruction of old buildings and erecting new ones instead. Isn’t this a common practice in your county too? If it is not, you are really lucky. On the contrary, in my county it is a normal practice. I have been fighting a lone battle against these “inhuman” tendencies for all these years but some people are supporting my cause these days. I am indeed fortunate to have their support. Never forget, this movement is not against modernization but against the destruction of history. A building is not the symbol of a single age only but through its architecture expresses the human emotions (of that age) also in the most plausible way.
Do you know that some states are becoming conscious of this reality and are taking exemplary steps as a result? One of them is Massachusetts and the notable approaches are being taken under the aegis of Erin Kelly, assistant director of Preservation Massachusetts. What is the objective of this organization? This is a nonprofit organization that promotes the need of preservation of historical buildings and due to this single reason the fashion of reusing old buildings has become more popular in these years. Let me ask one question. Why should people go for the old and used buildings instead of new ones? Remember that people can easily demolish it. A great reason is the environment. The others are distortion of history and the zeal to present some historical buildings to the posterity.
Take for instance Sean Donahue who lives in his apartment building on North Union Street, Rockland in the same region. There used to be a church in the same building before him and the church was preceded by a school. Isn’t this wonderful? Three different purposes originating from the same building and at different times, but each with its own history.
This can be regarded as the finest way of recycling, preserving old buildings and retaining the distinct flavor of the region.
It’s truly noble.
